It's Never Too Late to Discover What You're Capable Of
Three weeks before Richmond Dales Swimming Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary, I stood on the starting blocks at the British Masters Swimming Championships in Aberdeen.
I felt the familiar mix of nerves and excitement that every swimmer knows so well. It didn't matter that I'd raced countless times before. It didn't matter that I was 55 years old. That moment of taking a deep breath before the starter says, "Take your marks," never changes. And perhaps that's one of the reasons I still love swimming.
Every race asks the same question:
What are you capable of today?

A Weekend I'll Never Forget
Competing at the British Masters Championships is the highest level of domestic competition I can qualify for. Simply earning a place on those starting blocks felt like an achievement in itself. But the weekend exceeded anything I could have imagined.
I achieved two lifetime personal bests.
I finished 4th in Great Britain in the 50m Freestyle in my age group—my highest ever placing at the British Masters Championships.
I also qualified for the European Masters Swimming Championships.
At 55 years old.
What makes those achievements even more meaningful to me is that I didn't grow up as a competitive swimmer. Unlike many of the incredible Masters swimmers I compete alongside—many of whom have been racing since they were children—I only started competitive swimming at the age of 48. When I first stood on the starting blocks seven years ago, I could never have imagined that one day I'd be competing at the British Masters Championships, achieving lifetime personal bests and qualifying for a European Championships.
That's why I believe so strongly that it's never too late to discover what you're capable of.
Sometimes we tell ourselves we've missed our opportunity. That we're too old to start something new. That everyone else has too much of a head start.
My experience has taught me something very different. It's not about when you begin. It's about having the courage to begin.
A Very Special Evening
Three weeks later, Richmond Dales Swimming Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a Presentation Evening.
It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of swimmers of all ages and to recognise the incredible volunteers, coaches, officials and families who make our club such a special place.
It was also an opportunity for me to give something back. Through my business, Limitless – Strength through Breath, I was honoured to sponsor the Girls' 200m Freestyle event and present the medals. Swimming has given both my son and me so much over the years. Being able to support the next generation of swimmers felt incredibly meaningful.
Then came another surprise.
Alongside my friend Ruth, I was invited to receive a Special Achievement Award in recognition of our performances at the British Masters Championships and the qualification for the European Masters Championships. I genuinely wasn't expecting it.
Receiving recognition from your own club feels different.
These are the people who have watched the early morning training sessions, celebrated the successes and supported one another through the disappointments. That made the award incredibly special.
The Real Lesson
As I drove home that evening, I realised something. The medal was wonderful. The certificate was unexpected. But neither was the highlight. The real gift was the reminder that growth never stops. We often think personal development belongs to our twenties. That learning belongs in classrooms. That high performance belongs to elite athletes.
I don't believe that's true. Growth belongs to anyone who is willing to keep showing up. To keep learning. To keep believing that another chapter is possible.

I Practise What I Teach
People often ask why I'm so passionate about breathwork.
The answer is simple. Because I don't just teach it. I live it. Before standing on the starting blocks, I use my breath to calm my nervous system and focus my mind. When self-doubt appears, I use my breath to return to the present moment. When life feels overwhelming, I use my breath to create space before reacting.
The same principles I teach my clients are the ones I rely on myself.
Whether I'm helping a young swimmer prepare for competition, supporting a woman through the challenges of menopause, or working with someone rebuilding their confidence after a difficult period in life, it all begins in the same place.
The breath.
Because when we learn to regulate our nervous system, we don't just cope better. We perform better. We recover better. We think more clearly. We become more resilient.

What Is Your Personal Best?
One of the things I love most about Masters swimming is that success isn't measured against someone else's journey.
It's measured against your own. A personal best isn't about being better than everyone else. It's about discovering what you're capable of.
And perhaps that's true in life too. Your personal best might not happen in a swimming pool. It might be sleeping through the night after months of exhaustion. Finding the confidence to speak up. Leaving a relationship that no longer serves you. Starting a new career. Taking your first deep breath after years of living in survival mode.
Every one of those moments deserves celebrating.

It's Never Too Late
If the past few weeks have taught me anything, it's this.
At 48, I discovered competitive swimming.
At 55, I achieved two lifetime personal bests, finished fourth in Britain and qualified for the European Masters Championships.
Not because I was naturally gifted. Not because I'd been training since childhood. But because I kept showing up.
I kept learning.
I kept breathing.
And I never stopped believing that improvement was still possible.
We all have moments when we wonder if we've missed our opportunity. If we're too old. Too busy. Too tired. Too late.
I hope my story reminds you that those thoughts aren't always true. There is still another chapter waiting to be written. Another challenge to embrace. Another personal best to achieve. Whatever that looks like for you.
Because it's never too late to discover what you're capable of.
