Year 5 Pupils at Broomfield Primary Discover Their Inner Superpower

Conscious Breathing in the Classroom

Year 5 pupils at Broomfield Primary School have been starting their school days in a unique and empowering way, thanks to weekly Conscious Breathing in the Classroom sessions led by Steffy Cappleman, Founder of Limitless – Strength through Breath.

Visiting the class once a week at the beginning of the school day, Steffy has been introducing pupils to the power of conscious breathing, helping them understand how something as simple and natural as their breath can become a lifelong tool for improving how they feel, focus, and perform.

Through these engaging sessions, the children are learning how to breathe correctly to optimise their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing on a daily basis. They are also discovering a variety of breathing techniques they can use in different situations, whether they need to feel calmer before a test, more confident when speaking up, or more energised and focused for learning.

Importantly, these skills go far beyond the classroom. Conscious breathing is not simply about improving school performance—it is about giving children practical tools they can use in every aspect of life. Whether they are managing friendship challenges, handling emotions at home, preparing for a sports match, performing in a dance show, taking part in music lessons, or facing the nerves and pressure that can come with hobbies and extracurricular activities, their breath becomes a powerful way to stay calm, focused, and in control.

By learning how to regulate their nervous system and respond rather than react, these young people are developing emotional resilience and self-awareness that will support them not only through their education, but throughout adolescence and into adult life. These are true life skills, simple, accessible, and always available to them.

Steffy describes the experience as incredibly rewarding.

“It is wonderful to see how open these 9–10-year-olds are to learning about the superpower they carry inside them. They are fascinated by the science behind breathing and so engaged in understanding how it affects their bodies and minds.”

The sessions are designed not only for the pupils, but also for the teaching staff, who actively participate and learn alongside the children. This allows teachers to continue integrating conscious breathing practices into the daily classroom routine, helping to create a calm, focused, and supportive learning environment long after the sessions end.

Teaching staff at Broomfield Primary School have also seen the positive impact firsthand:

“Year 5 have benefited greatly from the Yes Breathwork course. Beginning each Tuesday morning with breathing strategies has helped the children develop practical tools that they can use in many areas of their lives, particularly when managing changing emotions and feelings. These calming and reflective exercises will continue to be revisited regularly in the classroom to support pupils’ wellbeing. Thank you, Steffy!”

By embedding these simple yet powerful techniques into everyday school life, pupils are being given practical life skills they can use throughout their education and well into adulthood.

This valuable opportunity for Broomfield Primary School, part of the Areté Learning Trust, has been made possible through funding secured by YES@ Areté Learning Trust via the Co-op Community Fund.

The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of wellbeing in education and demonstrates how small daily practices can make a lasting impact on young people’s confidence, self-regulation, and resilience.

As these Year 5 pupils continue to discover the strength within their breath, they are learning an important lesson early in life: sometimes, the greatest superpower is the one we carry with us every day.
